Privacy Policy

Last updated: 22 July 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how the Be Unchained Android application ("Be Unchained", "the app", "we") handles your information. Be Unchained is a content-blocking and accountability app. Protecting your privacy is central to how it is built: the app has no user accounts and no servers of its own, and it does not transmit your personal data anywhere.

1. Information we do not collect

Be Unchained does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide your name, email address or phone number. We do not collect, store on a server, or sell your browsing history, the list of sites you visit, or your personal identity. There is no analytics or advertising tracking in the app.

2. Information processed on your device

To do its job, Be Unchained processes the following locally on your phone only. This information never leaves your device:

  • Onboarding answers & your recovery plan — your questionnaire responses and the plan/commitment settings you choose, stored in a local database on the device.
  • App settings — which blocking features you have enabled and your protection preferences.
  • Network requests, in real time — the app runs a local VPN to inspect DNS lookups and block requests to adult or blocked domains. These lookups are evaluated on the device as they happen and are not recorded, stored or sent anywhere. Traffic that is not blocked is passed through to your normal DNS provider untouched.

3. Permissions and why they are used

  • VPN service — used solely to filter DNS requests on-device so blocked content cannot load. Be Unchained does not route your traffic through any external server and does not monitor the contents of your connections.
  • Accessibility service — used solely to detect when the user is attempting to disable or uninstall the app's protection, so the commitment lock can be presented. It reads on-screen window information only for this purpose and does not log, transmit or store the content of your screen.
  • Device administrator — used solely to prevent the app from being uninstalled while a protection commitment is active, supporting the accountability feature you opt into.
  • Display over other apps — used to show the lock screen that enforces your commitment.
  • Run at startup — used to restore your protection after the phone reboots.

These permissions exist to enforce the protection you set up. They are not used for surveillance and no data gathered through them is sent off the device.

4. Payments

Paid plans are purchased and billed through Google Play Billing. Be Unchained never sees or stores your card or payment details — that information is handled entirely by Google under Google's own privacy policy. We only receive confirmation from Google that a subscription is active.

5. Children

Be Unchained is intended for use by adults, or by minors with the involvement of a parent or guardian, and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

6. Data sharing

Because your data stays on your device, there is nothing for us to share with third parties. We do not sell, rent or trade your information.

7. Data retention and deletion

All app data lives on your device. You can erase it at any time by clearing the app's storage in Android settings or uninstalling the app (subject to any active commitment lock you enabled).

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
